Cask Conditioned Ale – Haiku

Cask Conditioned Ale – Haiku

An homage to my favourite beverage.

Cask conditioned ale, or real ale, is a living, working and uniquely British product. Fiercely popular, the humble pint could well be what saves the British Pub, which is rapidly becoming an endangered species. This is because the draft product is only available in a pub or at a beer festival.

What sets it apart from its keg, or ‘fizzy’ counterparts is the presence of live yeast inside the cask. This may be a kildekin, which contains 18 gallons, or a firkin, with a nine-gallon capacity. In Britain, a gallon consists of eight 20-ounce pints. It is the yeast that ferment sugars into alcohol and other tasty chemicals and give the beer its gentle sparkle.
